Job hunting can be stressful, especially while you are taking classes. To help you out, we have pulled together a few tips to think about when looking for jobs.
Before accepting a job offer
- Always meet with a potential employer in person at their place of business, and always meet your employer before you begin. Never accept a job with someone who says they are away on business or out of the country and need someone to begin right away.
- See if you can talk with people who work there or search online for employee reviews. Glassdoor is often a good place to look up employers and get insider info on how they hire.
- Be clear about the time you can allot to the job.
- Make sure to negotiate your salary and hours before you start.
Protecting your privacy
- Only provide personal or bank information in person—never over the phone or via email.
- Never take cashier’s checks or money orders as a form of payment. Your bank will hold you accountable for any bounced checks.
- Never apply to a position that is emailed to you unsolicited.
- You should not wire funds to an employer. Any employer who requests that you wire funds is likely a scam. Remember, they should be paying you!
- Background checks are normal in many companies, but only agree to this in person and preferably with the human resources department. Don’t give permission for this over email or phone.
